SV vs Everything Else: Why Your Gel Balls Keep Growing (and How to Stop Them)
Quick Answer: Some SummerCat gels (SV) are formulated to stay small no matter how long you soak them: 7.15–7.35mm, built for tighter-bore barrels. Everything else keeps growing the longer it soaks, and will reach 7.5–7.6mm if you let it. Match your gel and your soak time to your own barrel, or you'll get jams. Hardness is a separate check: GLOW and Milkies Soft are noticeably softer than the rest of the range and aren't the right pick for a hard-spring or high-FPS setup.
The first time it happened, I didn't know what was wrong with my blaster. I'd soaked a batch of Milkies for about four hours, same as I'd read somewhere online, loaded up and headed to a 7.3mm-barrel game. Within the first few minutes I was clearing a jam. Then another. Then another. By the end of the night I'd spent more time walking off the field to clear the barrel than actually playing.
I figured it was the blaster. It wasn't. When I finally measured a batch with a digital caliper, the gels had grown to somewhere around 7.5–7.6mm, too big for a 7.3mm bore, plain and simple. Nobody had told me that gel size isn't fixed. It's something you control, and if you don't, it controls you.
Why this keeps happening
Here's the mechanism nobody explains: SummerCat's SV gels (Pink SV, Jade SV, Frost SV) are formulated to stay small no matter how long you soak them. Three hours, four hours, overnight: SV caps out around 7.15–7.35mm regardless. There's no risk of over-soaking one.
Everything else behaves completely differently: Standard (Pink, Jade, Frost), Milkies in either hardness, Green, Orange and Pearl all keep growing the longer they sit in water, and at a full soak they land around 7.5–7.6mm. There's no built-in ceiling. The soak clock is the only thing controlling the final size.
Most players assume more soak time is either neutral or safer: "a bit longer won't hurt." For SV, that's true. For everything else, it's exactly how you end up with gels too big for your barrel, and exactly what happened to me.
Measure your own barrel first
Gel blaster barrels typically run 7.1–7.5mm inner diameter, with 7.3mm and 7.5mm the most common. That half-millimetre spread matters more than most players realise. It's the difference between gels that feed cleanly and gels that jam every mag.
Before you buy anything, measure your barrel's inner diameter with a digital caliper. They're cheap, and it's the only way to know which side of the SV line your setup actually sits on. Don't rely on what "everyone else" runs; barrels vary by manufacturer and by upgrade history.
- Barrel measures roughly 7.15–7.35mm: an SV gel (Pink, Jade or Frost) fits without you having to manage soak time at all.
- Barrel measures closer to 7.5mm: run Standard, Milkies, Green, Orange or Pearl, and soak to size (see below).

SV vs everything else, plainly
SV only exists on three lines: Pink SV, Jade SV and Frost SV. That's it. If you're running Milkies, Green, Orange or Pearl, there is no SV version of that colour; you're managing soak time by design, not by accident.
GLOW deserves its own mention here: it's Standard-size only. There is no SV GLOW. If you need a small, tight-tolerance gel and you were hoping GLOW would cover it, it won't. You'll need Pink, Jade or Frost SV instead, and lose the glow.
None of this changes with your propulsion system. There's no separate rule for HPA or GBB setups. The answer is always the same: measure your own barrel, not someone else's build.
Dialling in soak time if you're not running SV
If your colour of choice doesn't come in SV, soak time becomes your sizing tool. Every non-SV gel needs at least a few hours to grow, and the exact time you let it sit determines how close to 7.5–7.6mm it ends up. There's no universal number that works for every barrel; that's the whole point.
- Start with a short test batch, not your whole pack, the first time you try a new soak duration.
- Drain and measure a handful with a digital caliper before you commit the rest.
- Write down the soak time that got you the right size for your barrel. That's your number from now on.
- Test again with any new batch or new water source; growth isn't always perfectly identical batch to batch.
The alternative is simpler: if you'd rather not think about timing at all, an SV gel on Pink, Jade or Frost removes the variable entirely.

This is the part of the post most people screenshot and share.
Size fit is only half the picture. Every SummerCat gel is rated 10 out of 10 hardness, except two: Milkies Soft at 5/10, and GLOW at 2/10, the softest thing in the whole range. Softer gels can burst under a hard or upgraded spring, or on a notably high-FPS setup. They simply can't take the compression the same way a 10/10 gel can.
This is a completely separate check from size. A gel can be exactly the right diameter for your barrel and still burst in it if your setup is hot enough. If you're running a stock or standard-FPS setup, hardness isn't something you need to think about; any variant is fine. But if you've upgraded to a hard spring, or your chrono numbers run high, skip GLOW and Milkies Soft and pick any of the 10/10 options instead, sized to your barrel as above.
