LiPo (lithium polymer)
Common voltages are 7.4V and 11.1V. Lighter, holds its voltage right up until it's nearly flat, and hits harder on cycle speed and trigger response as a result. Needs a balance charger, needs to be charged on a fire-safe surface, and degrades badly if it's ever left fully drained or physically damaged.
Neither one is the "correct" choice. A stock nylon gearbox on 9.6V NiMH is a perfectly reasonable, low-maintenance setup for someone who plays casually. A tuned build running 11.1V LiPo makes sense for someone chasing rate of fire and already comfortable with the extra handling that comes with it. What matters for a used purchase isn't which chemistry the seller included. It's what state that specific pack is actually in.
Checking a Battery Before You Buy (or Before You List One)
This takes about a minute and it's the single most overlooked step in a used gel blaster deal.
- Look at the shape. A LiPo pack should be flat and firm along every edge. Any puffing, bulging, or a pillow-like softness in the middle means the pack is damaged internally and should be retired, not sold or bought. This is non-negotiable, and a swollen LiPo is a fire risk, not a cosmetic issue.
- Check the wiring and connectors. Look for scorch marks, melted connector housing, or exposed wire where insulation has worn through near the plug. Any of these point to a pack that's been run too hard or wired incorrectly at some point.
- Ask when it was last charged and how it's been stored. A seller who knows the answer has probably looked after it. A shrug is a warning sign, not proof of anything bad, but it means you should inspect more carefully.

A battery sitting at full charge for long stretches puts sustained stress on the cells even when it's not being used at all. LiPo cells are typically happiest stored at roughly 50-60% charge, noticeably below full, and a pack kept there between sessions will hold its performance and capacity for far longer than one that's routinely stored fully charged. Most decent balance chargers have a dedicated "storage" mode that does exactly this in a few minutes. NiMH is more forgiving of full-charge storage, but it isn't immune — a pack left sitting fully charged for weeks at a time will still self-discharge unevenly and age faster than one cycled more regularly.
The practical upshot for the used market: a battery that's two years old but has always been stored properly can easily outperform a battery that's six months old and was left fully charged in a hot car boot between every game.
